Particular Places: Negotiating the Life of a Garden - STEAMBOAT SPRINGS

by Emmanuelle Vital

Evo Design, an innovative landscape design firm, is transforming the way we relate to the particular places we live in or visit. Sustainability, substance and style define Evo designs.

Evo Design is the brainchild of its charismatic owner Lisa Lee Benjamin, whose enthusiasm and vision are creating new opportunities for human and ecological harmony. She envisions landscapes that not only complement individual styles, but inspire growth, wonder, and appreciation.

Success is often interwoven with challenges and Lisa Lee Benjamin embraces both, continuously researching new concepts and partnerships. Whether designing for a commercial green house, a vegetated roof, an urban deck patio, or a large landscape restoration project, Lisa seeks partnerships with national and international experts to offer “state of the art” design.

Working with Evo Design is a very personable and enriching experience. Based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado and San Francisco, California, Evo Design is an energetic team of landscape architects and ecological planners with experience worldwide. The design process begins with a site visit and discussion of the client’s needs and vision, budget and time frame. On-going conversations assist both Evo Design and the client in creating a vision that will trigger self-expression, creativity, and fulfillment for both.

While planning a new home or structure, Evo Design recommends spending a lot of time on the site prior to any design or construction in order to fully assess its assets and restrictions. Evo Design works closely with architects and planners to create rigorous designs that enhance both structure and natural environment. Such a collaborative approach often creates additional “rooms” on the exterior of a structure, pulling distant view closers, and minimizing the impacts of construction on the site.

Conceptual designs are not finalized until the client is fully satisfied. Evo Design then works closely with selected contractors to bring the design to life. Evo Design understands that landscape and gardens are constantly evolving as they mature and thus recognizes the importance of maintenance and long-term participation with the site to achieve design integrity. Lisa makes frequent visits to every property, dropping by not only to check on contractors but to visit with clients to ask if they are fully satisfied with the progress of the project.

The Evo Team knows that sustainable landscape design is unique to each property and their designs follow site-specific ecological principles. While designing a dynamic landscape, Lisa integrates natural geometries and follows the local and regional patterns to nurture the ecological functions of the landscape. Lisa often suggests using resources from the site and common native plants in an uncommon way to create a design that evolves beautifully through the seasons.

Evo Design is continually pursuing its goal to build sustainable landscapes and nourish the human spirit. Evo Design believes that regenerative design is not so much an individual art practiced by individual designers as it is an ongoing negotiation between the human community and the ecology of particular places. Evo Design provides a resource for individuals, communities, governments and groups interested in community-supported agriculture, public art, or open space restoration projects.

Evo Design is a broad-based firm offering design, construction and maintenance planning services for residential, agricultural, commercial and public properties in urban, industrial and rural settings. With the resources to accomplish many tasks, Evo Design is a small firm dedicated to individual service.
